PRE-ADMISSION INSTRUCTIONS FOR GASTROSCOPY AND COLONOSCOPY BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Please attend to the following as soon as possible:

  • Please advise us if you are over 80 years of age, diabetic, or taking any blood thinning medications such as Warfarin, Plavix, lscover, Clopidogrel, Effient and Prasugrel or have any serious medical conditions.
  • Please cease taking any oral iron preparations at least one week prior to admission date
  • If you are pregnant, possibly pregnant or breastfeeding, please contact your specialist prior to admission
  • If you have any concerns about your general health that may affect your admission (i.e. recent cardiac event, respiratory issues, elevated BMI), please contact centre prior to admission date
  • Check that your health insurance fund membership is current.
  • Check whether you have an excess or co-payment payable on your health insurance cover.
  • Please complete the patient pre-admission form, ensuring that you record your current medications and send to centre.
  • Please contact the centre for advice if you have any questions relating to the taking of current medications.
  • Please ensure you have arranged for someone to escort you home after the procedure. Failure to do this may lead to cancellation of your procedure.
  • Please contact your specialist or the centre you are attending if you have any pre-existing infections which may be of concern or may affect your suitability to undergo the procedure.

FASTING INSTRUCTIONS

DO NOT DRINK FOR 6 HOURS BEFORE YOUR TEST OR AS INSTRUCTED BY YOUR SPECIALIST.

However, please drink as much fluid as possible until 6 hours prior to the test. (Clear fluid if having a Colononscopy).

BOWEL PREPARATION

  • Each specialist has their own bowel cleaning prep, please be guided by them.
  • Bowel cleansing is essential before your procedure. Instruction sheets are available at our centre, and preparation kits from your local pharmacy. Please make sure you follow the bowel preparation instructions.

WHAT TO BRING and WEAR

  • Doctors letter /referral
  • Health insurance details
  • Medicare card
  • Other entitlement cards
  • Details of person escorting you home
  • If you have difficulty understanding English please ensure you have someone with you to translate
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing. Nail polish and false nails should be removed prior to the day of the procedure.
  • Any payment due on the day (NB payments made by credit card will incur a surcharge)
  • Payment can be made on admission by cash, cheque, credit and debit cards (Please note credit card payments will incur a surcharge). We do not accept Diners Club or American Express. Patients who have an excess/gap fee with their private health fund must pay their excess/gap fee to the hospital on the day of the procedure.
  • Please do not bring any valuables with you; Bayside Endoscopy does not accept liability for loss or damage of personal property.

OTHER INFORMATION

  • If you are unable to keep this appointment, please contact the above centre as soon as possible.
  • Please arrange for a friend or relative to collect you from reception, ABOUT 2 HOURS after the test.
  • Please ask them to notify the Receptionist of their arrival. You CANNOT DRIVE OR LEAVE THE HOSPITAL ON YOUR OWN. You cannot drive until the day following your procedure.
  • We strongly advise against patients going home alone by taxi. We will not undertake the procedure if you are going home alone by public transport.

CONSENT

  • Before having a procedure you are required to complete a consent form.
  • Your specialist is responsible for ensuring you are adequately informed about the procedure.
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss any questions you may have with the doctor prior to your procedure.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

  • Please report to reception as close to your admission time as possible. This is where your admission process will commence, and your procedure will follow as soon as possible.
  • You will then be escorted to the hospital interview room.
  • Nursing staff will ask you medical/health questions.
  • Nursing staff will explain the routine to you and allow you time to ask questions.

THE PROCEDURES

The procedure involves using a long, thin, flexible tube which is passed into the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. This will be done under intravenous sedation. MEDICAL RECORDS AND PRIVACY

Bayside Endoscopy complies with the Privacy Act 1988 and Health Records Act 2001. This ensures we collect, store, use and disclose health information in accordance with the law. Please visit our website, or ask to view a patient information folder at the centre for more information.

YOUR ACCOUNTS

It is advisable to contact your private health insurance prior to admission to check if an excess or co-payment applies to your level of cover for a procedure in a day hospital. If you are uninsured there are five separate accounts which may be issued in regard to your admission to this day procedure hospital:

  • Accommodation and theatre fee
  • Anaesthetist fee
  • Endoscopist fee
  • Pathology fee
  • Known gap

Not all of these accounts will be issued on the day of the procedure. See website or contact the hospital for more information

  • To assist us in identifying any potential risk factors, the correct completion of your medical history is essential. By completing this and/or submitting this 7 days prior to your admission date, will help fast-track the process.
  • If you have any concerns regarding your past medical history, please contact your specialist or the hospital you will be attending
  • If you have any concerns that your bowel preparation was ineffective, or you are experiencing side effects, i.e. vomiting, please contact the centre or rooms A.S.A.P
