Our Directors of Nursing

Marina Bryant – Director of Nursing








Marina trained as a registered Nurse at the Wollongong Hospital before going on to complete a Bachelor of Nursing at Monash University. Prior to taking on her current role of Director of Nursing at our Melbourne Centre, Marina held a variety of positions including Nurse Unit Manager of Endoscopy Unit at Frankston Hospital and Director of Nursing at Bayside Endoscopy.


Using the wealth of knowledge gained from her 15+ years endoscopy experience, Marina is heavily involved in our staff training, education and assessment for endoscope cleaning and reprocessing here at Melbourne Endoscopy Group.


Marina is an active member of the Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia (GENCA) where she holds the position of New Member Liaison Officer on the VIC/TAS Committee.


Outside of work Marina is a keen gym goer and a movie buff who also enjoys reading, listening to music and the ballet.


Dr Chris Desmond


Dr Chris Desmond is a Melbourne based Gastroenterologist who investigates and treats all areas of luminal gastroenterology and hepatology, with particular interest in colon cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, small bowel capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, food intolerances, irritable bowel and functional gastrointestinal disorders.


He performs interventional and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy (including ‘open access endoscopy’) at Melbourne Endoscopy Group in Melbourne and Bentleigh and a variety of other private hospitals. To treat a broad base of patients, Chris combines public practice at Monash Health where he is a visiting specialist and Deputy Director of Endoscopy, with a private Gastroenterology practice at Melbourne Endoscopy Group in Melbourne and Bentleigh as mentioned above. Dr Desmond provides a 7 day per week inpatient gastroenterology service at Cabrini Malvern and Cabrini Brighton.

In addition to treating individuals, Dr Desmond also dedicates time to teaching junior doctors and medical students. He is involved in teaching at the Monash University Medical School at Monash Health and Cabrini Hospital and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Monash University.

Dr Desmond completed physician training and Specialist Gastroenterology training at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He subsequently undertook a further advanced endoscopic fellowship at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, prior to undertaking an endoscopic ultrasound fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, USA. He also undertook basic scientific research through Monash University, Melbourne, where he was awarded an NHMRC Research Scholarship

Dr Glenda Hartley








Dr Glenda Hartley MBBS FRACP is a physician gastroenterologist who has had a private Gastroenterology practice at Melbourne Endoscopy since 1989, and also has an appointment as Honorary Visiting Medical Specialist at Monash Medical Centre.


Glenda studied medicine at Melbourne University and undertook specialist training at Prince Henry’s Hospital. Her main interests are in luminal gastroenterology, and the endoscopic management of gastrointestinal conditions, especially Coeliac Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Colorectal Cancer screening.


She is happy to accept direct access referrals for gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Dr Shireen Tabatabai

Shireen Tabatabai MBBS (Hons) FRACP graduated from Monash University with honors in 2000. Shireen completed her internship, physician training and Gastroenterology training at Monash Medical Centre. She was awarded the fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2008.


She is currently a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Monash Medical Centre. Shireen is also involved in clinical trials in Liver Disease.


Shireen works in private practice at Clayton and Moorabbin and performs Endoscopy in Clayton and Bayside Endoscopy Bentleigh.


She has admitting rights at Jessie McPherson Clayton and Cabrini Malvern.


Shireen Tabatabai’s clinical experience includes patients with Liver Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and performing upper and lower GI endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy). She has a special interest in diseases of the liver.
